I am Bradley Meier, Ph.D. (Licensed Psychologist) and I can help:
Recovery, healing and development is a journey that sometimes requires the expertise of a professional, whether the focus is on an individual, couple, family or organization.
The underlying foundation of my approach in working with people, groups and organizations is to help identify strengths and resources, improve awareness of vulnerabilities and liabilities, and to develop skills and strategies to manage the demands and challenges most effectively. Within this framework I offer traditional psychotherapeutic interventions for adults, teens, couples and families as well as personal coaching and psychological consultation. I have many years of experience in each of these areas.
Traditional Psychotherapy
If you are shopping for a therapist (something you should do rather than just randomly select), I have many years of experience working with adults and teens, with particular expertise in addressing and intervening with matters involving substance abuse, addiction, and other self-indulgent behaviors. If you question whether you have a problem of this nature through your own reflection or because others have said as much, I can help. I am willing to patiently, and non-judgmentally help you explore these questions in a confidential setting.
If you know you have to stop or cut down your use of alcohol, marijuana, drugs or other addictive behaviors, allow me to team up with you to put together a plan that fits your personal recovery goals. I can also help you to begin to sift through potential underlying emotional factors that contribute to or have been exacerbated by substance abuse and other addictive patterns.
If you are someone that currently lives or grew up in a home where drugs, alcohol and/or other dysfunctional circumstances dominated the dynamics, I can help you as well. Sometimes the emotional fallout from earlier-life experiences carry over to our adult lives, potentially impacting our emotional foundation, sense of control and confidence, decision-making and relationship choices. In addition to putting together a recovery plan centered on your goals, we can explore the choices you had available to you as a bystander of the past as well as the choices you have available to you now as you move forward and take control of your life.
Psychotherapy starts with a meeting where we talk in depth about the presenting concerns as well as a brief review of your life (lives) past and present. This session ends with a proposed plan for how we could proceed working together in future sessions, or, if preferred, recommendations for how you can proceed on your own, with attention to “warning signs” and other potential difficulties.
Personal Coaching
Personal coaching involves all that is good about psychology, with the emphasis being on personal development rather than the personal healing of psychotherapy. The emphasis is on improving as an individual in identified contexts. Common goals can include improving the level of functioning in social and professional situations so that you are more present and operating most optimally.
Coaching usually starts with a thorough 1:1 semi-structured interview that leads to the selection of psychological instruments that are carefully and individually selected based on your personal goals and obstacles. Once you complete the instruments, I take all of the information gathered and put it together in a formal report where your profile is explained in the context of your goals and interests. This provides the foundation from which our work ensues. It can also serve as a stand-alone document to guide you in your self-help quest. The goal is to raise your level of self-awareness, to more fully utilize and ultimately benefit from your strengths and to develop strategies to mange your vulnerabilities while keeping cognizant of identified goals.
Wellness Coaching
Wellness coaching also emphasizes the development of the individual, but the focus is usually very specific. People have aspects about themselves and/or lifestyles that they desire to change in order to function at a more optimal level. The focus can include areas such as smoking cessation, weight loss, physical fitness or coping/adapting to presenting health concerns. The focus can also include the effective adaptation to inherent difficulties such as attention and concentration difficulties (e.g. Attention Deficit Disorder), depression, anxiety and substance abuse.
Wellness coaching begins with an interview about the areas of concern, a formulation of goals, and a plan that is individualized and in sync with you. Too often approaches are "cookie cutter" and do not take individual variables into account. I focus on what has worked in the past, what seems to be
