The premise:  there is a need for mental health professionals:

In her "Message" as part of the Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General1, Donna E. Shalala, then Secretary of Health and Human Services, stated that "mental health is absolutely essential to achieving prosperity." David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., then Surgeon General, lamented in his Preface to the same report that despite advancements in other fields of science and health, "concerns regarding mental illness and mental health too often were relegated to the rear of our national consciousness." The emphasis on mental health in the nation is rightly so.  Mental illness and substance abuse affects the individual, his family, and the economy at large.  At the forefront of the fight against mental illness and substance abuse are the million strong mental health professionals.

The Mental Health:  A Report of the Surgeon General1 estimated that approximately twenty percent of the population in the United States suffer from serious to mild form of mental illness annually.  Applied to the U.S. Census's March 2010 estimated population of 309 million, this translates to more than 61,796,000 people of all ages in the U.S. afflicted with a form of mental illness.

The numbers are substantial.  However, what makes the picture significant is not what is shown, but what one does not see from the figures:  e.g., 50% of people afflicted with mental illness never receive treatment.  In 2008, out of more than 22.2 million people in the U.S. 12 years old and above meeting the criteria for substance dependence or abuse, only 2.3 million received treatment.  233,000 made efforts to get treatment, but were unsuccessful because they either did not know how to get help or where to go .2  There is, therefore, great need for mental health professionals.  For us, the question is not whether there are clients, the question is of marketing and educating.

The proposed solution:

ClinicalPsychotherapists.com's goal and purpose is to educate the public about mental illness by publishing articles discussing the most common forms of mental illness.  It is also our goal to provide the public of resources -- mental health professionals -- available to help them overcome their difficulties.

To accomplish this, we invite you to join us both as member of the Therapist Directory and by contributing articles that revolve around your scope of competence.  These articles can provide additional exposure to your practice while highlighting your expertise.
